The last known California Grizzly Bear was shot to death by a road crew in 1922 in Tulare County. Ranchers posted bounties of as much as $500 per kill. 1924 was the last reported sighting in Sequoia National Park. Twenty-nine years after its extinction, it became the official state animal.
